The God Conscience Series

The God Conscience: The Beginning

There are many people who shy away from religion because they feel there are too many rules and regulations by which to abide and are intimidated by the possibility of not being able to live up to them.

When we look at  the 10 Commandments in the Old Testament, other admonitions from God throughout Biblical text and through modern day ministers of the gospel we are bombarded it seems by teachings and requirements that are meant to govern our behavior.

Is that such a bad thing?

As children when we were being introduced to the world were we not given guidelines to follow, did we not have to be taught certain lessons and as a result develop specific attributes if we were to be productive adults?

Regulations for living existed from the very beginning. They exist to introduce us to specific principles and behaviors that are required for us to live our best lives.
God gave Adam specific rules to follow if he was going to be able to remain in the paradise that God created for him (Genesis 2: 15-17). God also gave the Israelites rules of godly living (Exodus 20:1-17) after bringing them out of Egypt where they had pagan gods and therefore needed to be reintroduced to the expectations of the God of Gods. While Jesus was on earth, His teachings have provided directional signs that we need to follow if we are to go in the right path in developing our relationship with God.

God does all this not so we are burdened with maintaining a seemingly never ending list of 'do(s)' and 'don't(s)' but He does so to show us:
(1) the importance of holy living
(2) the demands on our lives for righteous living and the fact that
(3) sin separates us from God

For that great divide separating us from God to be eliminated we must among other things be reconciled to God through our actions. The things we used to do that are not in line with what God says, we have to do them no more. We, as a result, set out on a journey with God through Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in us to be transformed from who we are, in to who God has called us to be! How will we know we are on the right path if there are no signs (those rules/teachings we talked about earlier) to guide us or to influence us?

Introspection:
Think about some of the 'rules' that you have abandoned or even ignored in your relationship with God and in any area of your life.

  • What was the rule teaching you?
  • How will conforming or not conforming to the requirement impact your life?
  • What does God say about it?
